Year 1976
MELANI's story began in Hong Kong with Mr. and Mrs. Ma, whose enduring love and partnership formed the foundation of a lasting fashion journey. For almost half a century, they built their business together with dedication and perseverance.
They opened their first boutique in Hung Hom. Mrs. Ma had a natural eye for fashion, and the pieces she selected were soon loved by customers. As the business grew, more boutiques followed under the name Orchid House. The name was inspired by Mrs. Ma's Chinese name, Mei Lan (美蘭), with "Lan" (蘭) meaning orchid.
Year 1986
They began designing and producing their own collections in Hong Kong, and MELANI was born. The name was also inspired by Mei Lan.
Originally known for quality tailored women's workwear, MELANI built its reputation on good fit, thoughtful design, and clothing created with Asian women in mind. Later, the next generation, Maria and Angel, joined the business in turn and became an important part of MELANI's journey in the years that followed.
Year 2006
Over the years, fashion changed, women's lives changed, and Hong Kong's retail landscape changed with them. MELANI continued to evolve from tailored workwear to more contemporary and versatile collections, while staying rooted in fit, quality and design.
This evolution took shape in Melani di moda, with a strong retail presence across Hong Kong for almost two decades.
Year 2025
New Chapter — A Message from the Director
When the family business that had carried MELANI came to an end in 2025, the story could have stopped there. Instead, I chose to carry the legacy forward. To me, MELANI was more than a fashion brand. It carried the love and values I grew up with. With decades of experience in fashion and a lifelong passion for styling, I saw an opportunity not only to continue MELANI, but to rediscover what it could truly become.
In 2025, MELANI began a major renewal, returning to the forefront with a refreshed fashion direction, new online and offline experiences, and a dedicated focus on styling. This renewal is more than a fresh image, it marks a clearer purpose for our future: to help women understand what suits them and learn how to wear it with confidence.
Through the years, we have learned that style is not defined by age, shape, or any single ideal of beauty. Every woman continues to evolve, and every stage of life can be an opportunity to rediscover herself and express the best version of who she is.
The generation before us taught us the value of love, resilience, and the courage to move forward. Today, I invite you to join us on this journey – to evolve, express yourself, and to Rise and Sparkle in Your Own Style!
